Nominations Now Open for 2020 Australia Day Awards

Mount Isans are being encouraged to nominate a deserving local unsung hero for Council’s 2020 Australia Day Awards, with nominations open now.

With a total of nine categories, the awards celebrate the often unrecognised yet greatly appreciated efforts of Mount Isa’s and Camooweal’s residents and groups.

The categories are:

  • Citizen of the Year Award
  • Young Citizen of the Year Award
  • Senior Citizen of the Year Award
  • Senior Sportsperson of the Year Award
  • Junior Sportsperson of the Year Award
  • Community Event of the Year Award
  • Arts and Culture Award
  • 2020 Southern Gulf NRM Sarus Crane Award
  • Council Nominated Spirit of Mount Isa Award

Mayor Joyce McCulloch said the Australia Day Awards paid tribute to individuals and groups who have made significant contributions to their local community and/or achieved exceptional results in sporting, or cultural endeavours.

“Australia Day is only three months away, so now is the perfect opportunity to nominate a friend, colleague or relative – someone who deserves recognition for their achievements and contributions to the Mount Isa and/or Camooweal communities,” Cr McCulloch said.

“This could be through their personal involvement in local clubs, sporting groups, volunteering, charity work, business, cultural or youth groups, or those who take on an advocating role to speak up for their community.”

In a first this year, people can now send through their nominations by filling out and submitting an online form – the link is available at

Alternatively, people can fill out a nomination form and email it to or drop it off at Council’s Administration Building at 23 West Street.

Nominations for the 2020 Australia Day Awards are open until 5pm on Thursday, January 10, 2020.

Winners will be announced at Council's Australia Day Awards celebrations and citizenship ceremony on January 26, 2020 at the Civic Centre on West Street.
